10 Useful Tips You Need to Know for Keeping Your House Clean

Some days I find it next to impossible to keep my house clean!

With 5 kids (2 of them toddlers), a bunch of extracurricular activities, blogging full time, and a husband that works full time, cleaning isn’t normally the first thing on my mind.

However, we both hate having a messy house. I’m sure you can relate to this scenario:

You spent the entire weekend cleaning and going through things to donate or get rid of (did someone say KonMari?). Come Monday evening, it doesn’t look like anything was cleaned or tidied! The dishes are piled up in the sink again, the laundry is overflowing, there are crayons and puzzle pieces all over the floor, and somehow the kids’ socks never seem to make it into the dirty laundry basket!

These are the days I wished I lived in a tiny house and didn’t have to worry about having so much stuff.

Don’t let it pile up!

Sunday is our cleaning day. I do my best to try and keep the house clean throughout the week, but with so much stuff going on, by the end of the day I just want to sit down with a glass of wine ?and chill!

So, as one of my goals for this year, other than to get rid of half the crap in my house is to try and keep the house cleaner on a more consistent basis. And in order to do that, I can’t just wait until Sundays to clean, we all have to pitch in a little bit every day.

I have invited guest contributor Abigail Kent here today to share her tips on how to keep your (and my) house clean without losing your mind!

Today I am going to be sharing with you my top 10 tips on how to keep a clean home. These are the 10 habits that I do to make my house look clean and organized. It is very difficult to keep it clean with young children. Sometimes when I clean the house it feels like they are literally behind me, messing up my good work (we’ve all been there right?!). But there are 10 things that I do to keep my house look clean and organized.

1. MAKE THE BED

So my first tip is a really quick and easy one but it is so effective and it is to make your bed every morning. Just by taking a couple of minutes to make your bed it can make your whole room look so much cleaner. After getting ready in the morning and just run around and make the kids beds as well.

2. FOLD THE CLOTHES

The next tip is to fold clothes. Refold your clothes in little parcels and then you line them up in your drawer and it makes finding things so much easier and quicker especially for children. They can just open a drawer and find what they want to wear easily without taking every item of clothing out. It is also really space saving. For smaller items you put small containers and put the smaller items in that. You can even label all of the little containers and drawers. This makes everything so much organized.

3. FIND STORAGE SOLUTIONS

My next tip is to invest in some clever storage solutions around your house and if you have any problem areas with things building up, it is to find a clever solution for that. Get small little baskets; put small plastic toys in it. If you have issue with shoes building up at the front door every day. Just call a carpenter to build a storage unit under the stairs, which just slides out (or if you have a handy hubby, recruit him to do it!). If you have a problem with towels, have hooks at the back of the door. Just label the hooks so everyone knows whose towel is whose and it is just really good.

4. MINIMIZE

It is also really important to minimize your things every six months and so. Take out all clothes at the change of every season and just go through what you want to keep and what you want to throw or give to charity. If you have not worn it for six or twelve months it is time to say goodbye. Do this with your makeup and also with your kids’ toys.

5. CLEAR COUNTERS

My next tip is to clear counters and that may seem like a very obvious tip. It is a bit like making your bed to make your room feel clean. Have places for bigger appliances to go and then just wipe down the counters and once that is done you will feel like the entire kitchen just looks so much cleaner and same goes for the bedroom and bathroom surfaces as well.

6. CLEAN TOP DOWN

Clean from the top down. Dust from the highest point. Then clean all the surfaces and then finally do the floor.

7. A LITTLE A DAY

With bigger tasks I like to break it up and do a little a day. Make a routine, do laundry; put on load every morning, dry it every afternoon and then fold it and put it away every evening. It is much easier than doing a dozen loads at the weekend.

8. SAVE ON CLEVER CLEANING PRODUCTS

This tip may sound a little strange to you but it honestly motivates me so much to clean and that is to invest in nice and clever cleaning products. You will enjoy cleaning with such products. It is quite fun using these products. You can keep looking up for these products online. Try to grab discount coupons, look for available promotional deals to buy these products on sale.

9. DO NOT SIT DOWN

At the end of the day, once your kids are in bed and you are really tired, do not sit down until you have done everything that you want to do the next day. It is better to get everything done before going to bed.

10. GET HELP

Get help and delegate. Ask your little ones to help you like in emptying the dishwasher; also tidying up their toys at the end of the day. It is also great to give your partner some jobs.

I hope my tips will help you in the future with your everyday house chores.
